VATEUD and Scandinavian VACC are pleased to advise that the Icelandic airspace will once again become managed by, and a part of, the Scandinavian VACC as from February 1st 2010.
A stand alone vACC did briefly exist last year, but for practical and logistical reasons, this was not sustainable in the long run, and at this particular moment in time we are all certain that the Reykjavik FIR will thrive within the overall Scandinavian VACC, receiving all the back office support, training, mentoring and other resources that exist within the larger Scandinavian VACC.
Director of Iceland FIR and Training Assistant for Iceland will be appointed by the Director of VACCSCA in due course.
All existing members of the former Iceland vACC, or any other member, who are interested in manning an ATC position within the Reykjavik FIR, need to join the Scandinavian VACC at http://www.vaccsca.org/ choosing the Join option at the left hand side.
Member's home vACC within the VATSIM Membership Database (CERT) will remain unaffected, and will stay as being ICELAND.
Whilst we all realize this has been a rather unsettling period for the members of the Iceland vACC, we are all convinced that this option is the very best for all concerned. Assurances have been received from the management of the Scandinavian VACC guaranteeing the Icelandic members equality within the vACC, and all efforts will be made to ensure the airspace in and around Iceland is kept active, busy and interesting.
To avoid any doubt, there are no airports within Reykjavik FIR which have been designated Major Airports (as defined under GRP2). However, BIRD_FSS is defined as Special Center.
EKVG (Faeroe Islands) will become airspace designated to the Reykjavik FIR, provided the necessary Letters of Agreement have been drawn up and accepted by the parties involved.
Kind regards
Peter I Nielsen
