Værøy opened as a heliport in 1972 with one route to Bodø. In 1986, a 800m or 2600ft runway was opened on the north side of the island. Routes from Værøy included Røst and Leknes. Then, in 1990, a plane craseh due to unpredictable wind gusts created by the mountainous terrain, this lead to the airport closed and a permanent heliport replaced it. Today there is one scheduled helicopter route to bodø and the airport serves just over 8 000 passengers yearly.

- The heliport has no STARs or SIDs
- The heliport has no instrument approaches
- There is no runway, this is a heliport and helicopters only
